The March meeting was called to order at 7:38 pm by the President – Dave Kirsten

The meeting was held at the American Legion Post in South Miami.

The first session of our Beer Style Educational Series (Stouts) was presented by Vice President, Bob Billany.  There were six stouts to sample and he reviewed the BJCP style guidelines.  All the members enjoyed it and would like to see this activity continue for our meetings.  Dave Kirsten will speak about English and American Pale Ales at our next meeting.

President Dave talked about his trip to California and showed of some of the beers he brought back and we will taste later.

The reading of January and February meeting minutes was accomplished.

The treasurer’s report recorded a balance of $4,113.14. There are no outstanding items at this point.

Old Business:

The NHC conference is being held June 25-27 in Philadelphia and several MASH members will be attending.

The second annual Key Largo Beer Fest will be held April 6 from 01:00pm till 05:00pm. This is not a BJCP judged event. If you want to enter a beer it will cost you $15 and you need to supply 24 bottles by April 4. The event will be held at Doc’s Diner at mile maker 104.5. The cost of a ticket is $35 in advance $45 at the door.

Hurricane Blow off entries start April 11. Dave will be driving up to deliver his entries and he offered to take up the other members entries too.  The competition is being held April 19-20 in Loxahatchee, FL.  The Palm Beach Draughtsmen are looking for judges.  If you can make the trip to Palm Beach, it is well worth it.

Coconut Cup is over for this year.  Scott Graham and Dave gave a recap.

New Business:

We have been asked to help out at the United Way Brews and Bites event again this year. It will be held April 17 at Wynwood Walls. They have asked for 8 members to help out. Members agreed to volunteer.  There will be an e-mail sent out with more information.

Big Brew is May 4. We will ask the Titanic Brewery to host.  Member Darryl Hickey will make the calls. Beer style or styles will not be decided until we have a venue.

We need more T shirts and or polo shirts with the club logo on them. A motion was set forth to have Jon get pricing for the next meeting.  The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

We discussed having oval stickers with “MASH” on them made up. Bob Beard will get pricing on them. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

We discussed having coasters with the guzzler on them made up. Denise will get pricing on them. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

The BOTY style for this month is Extract beers. We have seven  entries this month. Third place went to Tony and Brandon. Second place went to Danny Argudin. And the first place was awarded to Matt Waldron.

February 28, 2013 Top

The February (2/28/2013) meeting was called to order at 7:30pm by the President –  Dave Kirsten.

The reading of January’s meeting minutes was waived.

The Treasurer’s report recorded a balance of $2398.72, with pending deposits and withdrawals for the Coconut Cup Competition. Next meeting’s report we will have our balance and we will determine what our budget is.

Old Business:

Best Florida Beer Championship: Our brewing team of Bob & Dave took a third place medal in the Smoke & Wood-Aged category with their Oaked Bourbon Stout.

NHC competition registration is locked now.

Coconut Cup prejudging has taken place and we have one more session Friday, March 1st.  If you can make it, please be there.  We have 37 total flights to judge.  15 have been completed, leaving 22 of which 11 are second round.  The big event is this Saturday (March 2nd) and we will need everybody’s help.  A motion was set forth to use the second round non-scoring form. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

New Business:

We had a student from FIU’s School of Journalism at the meeting working on a project.  She is filming our meeting and conducting interviews.

A motion was set forth to cancel the June 27 meeting and hold it at the Summer Solstice party. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

A motion was set forth to hold the Summer Solstice party on June 22. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay. No location was decided on yet.  We will revisit this topic next meeting.

A motion was set forth to change the November meeting date from the 28 to the 21 due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

Education of our beloved hobby was brought up. For the next three months we will have a speaker going over a category (BJCP) guidelines. This will be done at the beginning of the meetings and will be conducted by one of our members. A motion was set forth and seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

Matt mentioned that he is working on a speaker who is a brewer in the UK for our August meeting.  More to come on that next month.

Marketing and media – MASH has a twitter account with the address of “@MASH_FL”.  Please start using it.  We then had member Matt explain how it works and gave a quick lesson on how to post a twitter or is it a twitt? A motion was set forth to make Matt our Social Media Coordinator. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

The March meeting is scheduled for Sports Grill in South Miami. A motion was set forth to move the meeting start time back to 07:30pm. The motion was seconded and a final vote was all yea and no nay.

We have not heard from the United Way Brews and Bites event coordinator yet but believe the event is being held April 13 or thereabouts. We will try and get more information.

The BOTY style for this month is Barleywines. We had three entries this month. Third place went to Dave and Bob. Second place went to Scott and Denise. And the first place was awarded to Jon & Alisa Britton, who have taken the lead in the cumulative standings.

          • Registration opens February 5th. Register for conference and hotel on the 5th if possible. Conference will sell out quickly.
        • Club shirts
          • The company that we got shirts from no longer has our artwork on file. They can digitize our artwork for $60.
          • Suggested to keep the palm tree logo for polos and guzzler for t-shirts.
          • Suggested to have a simpler logo (mash paddle and club name?) embroidered on guayaberas.
          • Bob Billany will check on another possible company.
        • Upcoming Calendar Events
          • Proposed summer solstice party date: Saturday, June 22nd. Location needed.
          • Proposed to move the November meeting date to the third Thursday of the month due to Thanksgiving.
          • Proposed winter solstice party date: December 14th. Location needed.
        • Membership Directory
          • Members are asked to complete a directory information form.
          • Directory information will be placed on a password-encoded section of the MASH website.
        • February Meeting
          • The February meeting will be held at the American Legion.
        • Club Jockey Box
          • Bob Billany proposed the construction of a club jockey box for use at festivals and other group gatherings. Construction was approved.
          • Procedural guidelines will need to be created.
            • Who will be responsible for maintenance, storage and transportation?
            • How can we manage fair and equitable beer supply for events?
            • How will reimbursement be handled for beer donations?
        • BJCP Certification
          • Danny A. passed the initial part of the BJCP exam. Congratulations, Danny!
          • Scott will look into the possibility of applying to host a BJCP tasting exam.
          • Danny, Dave and Bob are on the list to take the tasting exam at the NHC in Philadelphia.
        • Education
          • Now that we have a quieter meeting venue, it was proposed to add an educational component to the BotY competition.
          • Two possibilities were suggested:
            • The winner of the BotY will be responsible for discussing the next BotY style at the next meeting.
            • Circulate a sign-up sheet and let members choose which subject they would like to present.
          • Bob Billany will send an email requesting feedback.
      • Brewer of the Year 
        • Upcoming BotY styles:

          • Four beers were entered: two oatmeal stouts, one milk stout and one chocolate milk stout

DECEMBER 2012 Top

The December meeting of the Miami Area Society of Homebrewers was called to order on December 15, 2013.

In attendance: Jon (President) & Alisa Britton, Denise (VP) & Scott Graham, Eric (Scrollkeeper) & Caroline Johnson, Darryl Hickey (Librarian), Bob (Treasurer) & Jodi Beard, Dave Kirsten, Bob & Rachel Billany, Josh Kritzer, Danny & Arlene Argudin, Patrick Whiteside, Danny Smyth,Steve Copeland, Guests.

The first order of business was a motion was set forth and seconded to retain Bank United as our bank and to change the signers on the account from Darryl Hickey and Scott Graham to David Kirsten and Bob Beard. The motion was passed by Majority vote (100% yea).

No checks have been issued since last meeting.

A motion was set forth and seconded to make a $250 donation to “Susan G. Komen for the Cure”. The motion was passed by Majority vote (100% yea).

The Coconut Cup date was set for March 2, 2013. Pre-judging dates were discussed, but not set until we contact the out of town judges to see when they are available. Bob Beard to determine cost and availability of the American Legion Hall for pre-judging. Jon Britton is the Coconut Cup Chairman and Scott Graham is the Head Judge. Entries will be capped at six per person with a max of 300 for the competition in total.

A motion was made and passed to reschedule monthly business meetings to the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. These meeting will be primarily held at Sunset Grill in South Miami with a social gathering to follow at other sites.

Miami Beer Festival has been confirmed on January 19, 2013 at Marlins Stadium. 4 brewers to get free tickets.

The redesigned web site is being built and David has a beta version set up and is asking the membership to visit it and send him any comments, suggestions and/or changes.

The 2012 BOTY cup (in this case it was cups) was awarded to David Kirsten and Bob Billany. Congratulations you brewers of the year. challenge was set by them for all the membership to win the cup form them next year.

Officer elections where held for the 2013 offices. We had a majority vote for officers of the club (100% yea).

The new officers for the 2013 year are as follows:

      • David Kirsten – President
      • Bob Billany – Vice President
      • Bob Beard – Treasurer
      • Darryl Hickey – Scrollkeeper
      • Eric Johnson – Librarian

Congratulations to all of the 2013 officers and may you uphold the standards that so many in the past have set. Thank you to the 2012 past officers for a fine job and all the time you put into the club.

The last order of business was the December BOTY. The category was Non-Session beers (beer above 1.040 OG). We had nine entries from seven different club members. A judging panel of three – Eric Johnson, Steve Copeland and Darryl Hickey – tasted all the entries. Five entries were selected and tasted again. From there the three winners where set as follows:

- First place went to David & Bob for their Belgian Tripel.

- Second place went to Scott & Denise for their Christmas Ale.

- Third place went to Danny Smyth for his American Pale Ale with rosemary.

Congratulations to the winners. It looks like David and Bob are going for the cup again.
