President’s Message – March 2013

Greetings and salutations from Moylan’s Brewery in Novato, CA.  I am wrapping up a week-long family vacation / beer tour in the San Francisco area and, subject to our friends at UPS, will bring a few samples from the local breweries (Russian River, Lagunitas, 21st Amendment, etc.) to our next meeting on  Thursday, March 28th.  This month’s meeting will be held at the Sports Grill in South Miami and begins at 7:30 p.m.  But, feel free to stop by earlier for a bite and some conversation.

As we reflect on another successful Coconut Cup, the Hurricane Blowoff Homebrew Competition is rapidly approaching.  If you haven’t entered your brews yet, it is not too late.  The entry window remains open until March 29th.  Be sure to bring your entries to our meeting on Thursday.  A few of us will be running them up the railroad to the new Tampa Bay Brewing Company in Coral Springs on Friday night.

A number of folks from the Palm Beach Draughtsmen lended much-needed support to us last month.  Let’s be sure to return the favor.  Judging sessions will be held at El Encanto in Loxahatchee on Friday, April 19th and Saturday, April 20th.  This is always a lot of fun and a great way to hone your judging chops. More details to follow.

In preparation for the upcoming BJCP tasting exam, we will be reinstating the “edumacational” portion of our meetings.  This month, Bob Billany will be talking us through BJCP Category 13 – Stouts as we sample commercial examples of each sub-category.  Danny Argudin and I will be leading similar sessions over the following months.

And of course, be sure to bring your finest extract beers for this month’s BOTY competition.  This is the AHA Club-Only style for May 2013.  Let’s send them our best!

Lots more to talk about on Thursday, but my flight sampler is growing warm.  Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday.

Cheers!

Dave
